Over the last year I've had a chance to visit and write about Durham. One recurring theme I've found is the growth of small, locally-owned businesses. The Town has encouraged this trend with the aim of retaining our small-town character despite being home to a major university.
Laura Rothstein has a background in retail clothing, and as her kids grew older she began to think about opening a clothing store. Initially she considered a consignment shop or men's and women's clothing, but finally settled on a women's boutique. Her first thought for a location was Portsmouth, but came to realize that her hometown of Durham was a good fit and lacked a place to buy clothes. The store opened in 2012, and Christina Buteau joined her in establishing their initial location on Madbury Road. When 49 Main street was renovated and expanded, they moved to their current location right in the center of town.
The store's vision is to provide a selection of clothing that appeals to women of all ages and shapes. The space has a funky, inviting feel and is a place where college students and local moms alike can find items to fit their lifestyle. One of the major benefits of a locally-owned store is that Laura and Christina take the time to learn about you. They provide helpful advice about styles and fit. They want to ensure that you are comfortable and look great.
So what type of clothes do they carry? One of their top selling items is jeans. As you would expect, they carry a wide selection of styles and sizes. They also carry dresses, jewelry, and accessories. Laura and Christina make trips to New York City and Boston often, and hand-pick seasonal items for the store. This helps insure that the quality of the merchandise is excellent and that the styles are a match for women in the community.
You can find SolSistar on the corner of Mill Road and Main street. Their address is 49 Main Street, and you can reach them by phone at (603) 397-5229. They are usually open Monday through Saturday from 10am-6pm , but call and check on summer hours. If you interested in browsing their selections, you can check them out on facebook and Instagram. Summer is a great time to stop in and meet Laura and Christina.
